- Appropriated funding: $3,119,950
- Project type: Rehabilitation/replacement
Description and Scope
This project is to replace and modernize the Library's Automated Materials Handler System.
Replacement will require the renovation of building space at several locations. The most extensive renovations will occur at the Central Library and the Joint-Use Library (will require prior approval from TCC).
Following those two libraries will be the Kempsville Library, Bayside Library, Princess Anne Library, Oceanfront Library and Great Neck Library.
Purpose and Need
The current AMH system has been end-of-life by the vendor for several years. Therefore, maintenance costs have started to become unmanageable.
The AMH systems used at the various branches are maintained internally by the Technology Services Staff. However, there have been times where external contractors had to be hired. A replacement system will save the Virginia Beach Public Libraries significant financial and time resources as opposed to hand sorting the materials.
The system will allow for customers who do not want to interact with staff or other customers to drop off materials with no human interaction. The new system will use modern components, which will have less reliance on rubber bands to move rollers, and a dedicated support contract that will help mitigate maintenance costs.
The existing system is at the end of its useful life expectancy. Failure of the current system will slow down the returning of materials and negatively impact services already provided.
